Develop your academic research skills for successful assignments and dissertations

Developing your academic research skills is vital for success at university. This involves using a variety of methods and specialist tools to find current, reliable information from different resources, to help you answer your specific assignment or dissertation question.

There are two main types of research:

  • Primary research – collecting and analysing your own data through surveys and questionnaires (quantitative data) or interviews, observations, fieldwork (qualitative data) .
  • Secondary research – finding and using information from existing sources such as books, journals, databases, reports, statistics, and more. As this work is produced by other authors, accurate referencing is essential to avoid plagiarism.

If you are doing primary research, your lecturers will guide you. Most of your work will focus on secondary research. Explore the steps below for successful secondary research.
